Our Spiritual Journey begins as we depart New York, JFK, on our Delta Airlines flight to Rome.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009
ROME

The seven hills of the Eternal City spread below on our descent to Rome. We meet our guide and driver. Since the hotel is not ready until 1PM, we drive through Rome and visit the Catacombs of St Callistus and celebrate Mass. After lunch, we check into our hotel. The remainder of the day is free time to rest and refresh. After dinner tonight, we take a “Night Tour of Rome” and see the magnificent fountains including Trevi.

ROME

After breakfast, we drive to St Peter’s to attend the general Audience with Pope Benedict (subject to his health and travels). After lunch, we visit the Basilica of St Mary Major and the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls. Tonight dinner at our hotel.

Thursday, September 24, 2009
ROME/SUBIACO/MONTECASSINO

This morning we depart for Southern Italy. We visit the mountain retreat at Subiaco, where St Benedict spent 3 years in a cave. There we celebrate Mass. Then we travel to Montecassino, founded by St Benedict. Destroyed during WW II, it was rebuilt as a replica of its 17th century predecessor. We continue to Avellino and visit Our Lady of Moutevergine, elevation 4191’ above sea level. The cable car ride is breath taking. Overnight in our hotel.

AVELLINO/POMPEII/HERCULANEUM/AVELLINO

Today we take an excursion to Pompeii and Herculaneum. The people of Pompeii were quite unprepared for the eruption of Vesuvius - getting on with their busy lives, in total ignorance of what was to come. It is certain that when the eruption of Vesuvius started on the morning of 24 August, AD 79, it caught the local population utterly unprepared.  We then drive to Herculaneum. This was a smaller town than Pompeii, but with a wealthier population at the time of its destruction.  After lunch and Mass, we return to our hotel for dinner.

Saturday, September 26, 2009
AVELLINO/SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO/MONTE SANT'ANGELO/LANCIANO
Today we depart Avellino and drive to San Giovanni Rotondo, home of one of our newest saints, Padro Pio. There we celebrate Mass in the church Of Santa Marie Delle Grazie and visit the tomb of Padre Pio and other sacred places associated with St Padro Pio. After lunch, we visit the Grotto of Michael the Archangel, one of the most celebrated shrines in Italy. We then drive to Lanciano, famous for the Eucharistic Miracle. Dinner tonight at our Lanciano hotel.

Sunday, September 27, 2009
LANCIANO/LORETO

After breakfast, we visit the famous Sanctuary of the Eucharistic Miracle. The holy miracle resides near the Piazza Plebiscito. The miracle took place during the 8th century when a monk doubted the Real Presence of our Lord in the Eucharist, found himself holding a host that had changed into flesh and the wine had changed into blood. After Mass and lunch, we depart for Loreto to visit the Holy House of Loreto, the first shrine of international renown dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. It is the shrine dedicated by Pope Benedict XV, as the universal patroness of aviation and is considered to be a shrine for all pilots. A large Basilica has been built around this same shrine and the sacred site attracts over 4 million visitors each year. Overnight in our nearby hotel.

LORETO/RAVENNA/PADUA/VENICE-MESTRE

Today we depart for Padua, home of St Anthony. Enroute we stop at Ravenna and visit the early churches and the medley of old streets, fine shops and peaceful piazza. After lunch, we continue to Padua where we will celebrate Mass.  The Basilica of Saint Antonio contains Donatello's Altar and the remains of the saint. Pilgrims flock here every year to visit the grave.

Tuesday, September 29, 2009
MESTRE/VENICE/MESTRE

After Mass, we transfer to Venice Island and begin our half day guided city tour of Venice. We visit the Golden Basilica of San Marco, the Bridge of Sighs, St. Mark’s Square and the Doges’ Palace (outside view). The remaining of the day is free for self exploring, shopping, gondola rides, eating, etc.
