HERZEGOVINA
Some call it “the Mercedes country” as this car type is probably more popular here than in its hometown. This Southern part of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina will surely surprise you in many ways. You will see some Muslim villages like Pocitelj with great architecture but majority of population is Croatian and Catholic. Medjugorje is one of the holy places visited by millions of Christian pilgrims from all over the world.
In the past this area was of special interest to ruling Austro-Hungarian Kaisers because of tobacco plantations. Today vineyards prevail together with fruit and vegetable. They all grow very well thanks to a lot of sun, warm weather and water brought by rivers Neretva, Trebizat and others. “Trupica” is a traditional wooden canoe of the Neretva delta and is still very much in use by farmers – nowadays with an outboard motor. Neretva was once a beautiful river, today most of its wildest canyon is buried under water behind large dams. Only the first 20 miles are still intact.

Trebizat is a favorite canoe adventure destination for tourists residing in Croatian coastal resorts between Dubrovnik and Split. You will feel as if you were canoeing through a jungle as this combination of good land, clean water and lots of sun is just what plants need to make everything very green. Nearby Hutovo Blato lakes and wetlands have one of the richest bird population in Europe – over 250 different kinds!
