CANOEING
“The smaller, the better”. We prefer smaller rivers. When river banks are all green, full of flowers, birds and curious little mammals, it is a shame to see only half of it. On narrow rivers you will enjoy both banks on one trip. On wide ones you should travel twice. Canoeing on a lake that used to be a river is like being in a beautiful but unhappy country. There is something missing.

In 1988 we, the canoeists, were the first tourists in the canyon and valley of Zrmanja river. We organized canoe camping trips and were paying the local farmers for everything they provided – camp, food, wine, firewood… When the government wanted to dam the river the local people voted against it. That is why we call our club “Riverfree” and that is why we want YOU on our rivers – so that our children will have them, too.
Most visitors come to Croatia in Summer and stay by the sea – just when the most beautiful rivers of Croatia are perfect for canoe or kayak touring. They flow between hills and forests in uninhabited areas and have nothing in common with crowded beaches of seaside resorts. Spending a holiday in Croatia without at least one day on the river is like having a lunch without a desert. So when you plan a vacation by the sea, plan a day on the river. It will be your best.
